Tim Watts
Lighting Up Custom Trailer Business

Tim Watts, an experienced machinist and welder, was challenged to put his skills to the test five years ago after his wife came up empty handed in her pursuit of the perfect horse trailer. And he passed with flying colours."My wife was looking for a horse trailer and she couldn't find what she wanted, so I built one for her - a three horse angle haul, with simple living quarters and a full sized shower inside - one that is easy to load and unload," says Watts. "When you're poised to spend a lot of money on a trailer, if it's not perfect you are not going to want to spend the money."

That project launched the impetus behind a new division of his business - constructing custom trailers, from utility to horse trailers as well as truck decks, comparable only in price to the mass produced "cookie cutter" trailers you find on today's lots. But when you compare the value, it's like comparing equines to bovines.

Specializing in custom machinery at Nikanda Industries Inc. gave Watts the foundation to tackle projects of this calibre. Since, then, he's created a dozen custom trailers, each an improvement on the one before. "If you can dream it, we can build it," says Watts, "whether you you are looking for a trailer to haul horses, stock, or something with a place for you to sleep."

"Basically we can design and build the entire trailer, or we can can build a rolling chassis so people can finish it off themselves," says Watts. "If someone has some mechanical ability, but can't weld or fabricate, they can put in their own flooring or do their own wiring, which will cut down on costs."

Because Alberta is a hot spot for ranchers and producers, there is a high demand for trailers of this nature and Watts says he is glad to be able to provide this service. After making a personal appointment with the customer to discuss his or her needs, Watts drafts a prelimnary design and irons out the finer details. If the initial drawings are to the customer's liking, he figures out a quote and if the customer approves, production begins.

"People who have horses and livestock that they show want the best for their animals and they are willing to buy the best," he explains. "When you buy a horse trailer you're making an investment, you want to make the best investment you can, and get what you want."
